Holograph poem written and presented to The College of Wooster during a visit to campus on October 20, 1932. He read from his poems at a campus-wide chapel program, and included this new quatrain inspired by his friendship with John D. Overholt, College of Wooster class of 1907.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
